Types of Restorative Dental Solutions

Why taking a good oral health is essential? Because this way you will prevent certain diseases to happen. That is exactly what some of the researchers have told. Also, regular dental visits will keep your smile attractive, but they will also tell a lot about your overall health condition. Poor oral health can lead to many other issues, so is more than important to make regular dental visits. But, sometimes, no matter how much you are trying to keep your teeth white and healthy, accidents and diseases do happen so you may still experience missing teeth. Regardless of the reason for such condition, the good thing is you can have your missing tooth back.

With all the advances in dentistry, today there are more different solutions used to replaced missing teeth or repair missing parts of the tooth structure. Depending on your individual need and condition, the dentist may provide you with crown – a tooth-shaped cap placed over a tooth, implants – replacement tooth roots, bridges – false teeth that are designed to bridge, dentures – removable teeth replacement for missing teeth and last but not least, the dental fillings. They are the most common teeth replacement solution used in modern dentistry not just in young patients, but in adults as well.

If you are a candidate for dental fillings, your dentist will offer you a few different types of fillings to choose from. Each of them has its own pros and cons.

  • Composite fillings – One of the choices are composite fillings and they offer a great strength. When they were used for the first time in dentistry there were certainly not so strong, but thanks to the advances in materials today the composite fillings are reliable and long lasting.
  • Glass ionomers – They are very similar to composites but they are not as aesthetic as them. They are commonly used for root cavities because they are not so strong as composite fillings but their positive side is they are BPA-free and resistant to new decay.
  • Silver fillings – They are the least expensive option but they will leave you with unnatural look for sure. Because of this, they are rarely used a choose by the patients.

The procedure is standard. Firs of all, your dentist will isolate your tooth that needs filling. When this is done, the dentist will use special tools to remove the decay. If the decay is a bit deeper, then he places a liner in order to protect your nerves from damage. The next step, placing the filling material into the area and using special bonding light to harden the filling and seals it in. You might feel weird the first time you need to take a bite, but this is something that can be fixed. Your dentist will not leave you to go home without making sure you have a comfortable bite.

When speaking of the life span, it is hard to say how long do fillings last. There are a lot of factors here that contribute to the longevity of the fillings: the type of food you eat the most, the material was chosen, drinks consumed, some habits like grinding your teeth, etc. However, they generally last at least five to eight years, but if you take a good care of them, you can give them a longer life.
